The Walking Box Ranch

The Walking Box Ranch is a historic landscape near Searchlight, Nevada. The ranch became famous after in 1931 when silent movie stars, Rex Bell and Clara Bow, built the Spanish-colonial house. Since 2004, The UNLV public history program has worked to preserve and interpret the historic site. I participated in two UNLV graduate classes, HIST 749 and HIST 750, which researched and worked on the reinterpretation of the Walking Box Ranch. My contribution to the project was developing and implementing an OMEKA database to present resources and material cultures related to the historic site. The goal of the database was to create one location the public could visit to research, explore, and engage with the Walking Box Ranch. While creating the OMEKA website, I collaborated with the Bureau of Land Management, Nevada State Museum, Friends of Walking Box Ranch, and UNLV Special Collections in order to consolidate materials related to the ranch. The website presents artifacts, tours, and UNLV students’ research. The OMEKA website is a foundational tool for preserving the history of the Walking Box Ranch.
